Our Mission Statement

“We are a family of diverse individuals called by God to be open to many points of view where love and acceptance dominate.  For our own community of faith, we seek to be the extended family for all through support, fellowship and worship.  We are committed to Christian service in our community and participation in the life of the larger church.”

What does our Mission Statement mean to you?

UMCA members are invited to contribute a few sentences on this subject to be posted in this space.

After long deliberation and discussion, the input by UMCA members gave birth to our Mission Statement. It (Mission Statement) says it all, concisely, briefly, profoundly, what we are, a family....Marcia

In a nutshell, we choose acceptance over prejudices and put others before self, all in our Lord's name.    -  Margie
Hello!  I wish I was creative, but think this is the best Mission Statement I've seen -- it says it all, and think it great to have it in the bulletin each week telling what we are all about.  Whoever put it together did an excellent job--and the church lives this.  -  Dorothy
The UMC has been very important to Jacque and me since we have lived in Atascadero.  It has provided us with a very loving family which has given us comfort and a sense of spiritual well being.  The Mission Statement for the UMC was very carefully and thoughtfully developed in the early 1990's.  Particular care was taken that the Mission Statement would be broad enough to comfortably enfold existing and all to be members in our congregation.  The opening sentence "We are a family of diverse individuals called by God to be open to many points of view where love and acceptance dominate" was designed in order that we never lose sight of our tolerance for many points of view and a sensitivity to not alienate or disenfranchise members (or to be members) by pursuing personal agendas as our church's agenda.   - Bill

It really does include our thoughts, but in our own words:  In searching for a church in this community we found that AUMC had the most people actively following Jesus by loving their neighbors and doing good works.  We come from diverse religious backgrounds, Walter, Congregational and Mayrene, Universalist.  This congregation is accepting of our theological differences because we are all trying to live by the message Jesus has for us.

I think the opening sentence makes us very unique in a world of religions where many are closed, unaccepting and judgmental. God has made us all individuals with our own racial heritage, bodily features and personalities.  Our place in the world has given us certain cultures and environments.  It has made the world a wonderful place of interesting and surprising peoples.  God loves us all.  Can we do less?  See you in church! -  Rosemary  Sack Race at the UM Picnic
